Have you even heard the saying, “If you want to get something done, give it to a busy person to do”? This is because, as we become busier, we get better at getting things done. There is only so much time. We have all been given the same amount. What was it, eighty-six thousand four hundred seconds per day? But what you and I do with this time may be completely different. In fact, it’s always different. We live different lives and have different values. Some people chase money, others are lost in relationships, and yet others are simply chasing their tails and not accomplishing much, if anything. Then there are others who lead joyful and fulfilling lives one moment at a time.

Why do busy people get more done? It is simply because of Parkinson’s Law. The law states that work expands to fill the time available. For instance, if a little old lady wanted to send a postcard to her great-grandson, she might spend considerable time picking out the card, then head to the post office to choose just the right stamp. Now what to say on the card? This could take hours as it is very important. You see, with all day to dedicate to the project, why not take all the time getting it done? The reverse is true as well. The less time available, the more efficient we become by default. Get the point?

As life starts to move more quickly for you, time will be limited. You will have to fit more stuff into fewer hours. As I write this book, I personally have nine significant projects I am working on. I do not feel overwhelmed either. I just need to use my time appropriately and get something accomplished every day. I make a list on my iPhone calendar and check it frequently. If I don’t get something done, I move it to another time slot.

Staying completely focused on your present project is paramount. That is primarily why I jot things down. I do not need to cloud my mind with all the other projects while working on this one. Power is derived from doing what you are doing when you are doing it. In other words, forget about multitasking. Stay focused on what you are doing, and get it right the first time. In some instances, it could save your life. Besides, who has time to spend doing things over? If you need to multitask, then delegate work to those whom you can trust to get things done without interrupting you. Like Ron Popeil says, “Set it and forget it.” Then move on to the next project, but stay focused on what you are doing.

With that said, being organized will help you tremendously. Have a good filing system. Touch a paper one time and then put it where it belongs. Organize everything in your life, from your wardrobe to your refrigerator. Personally, I do not have the time or patience to search for the capers every time I want to add them to a favorite recipe. Again, we only have so many seconds in a day. I would prefer to spend them enjoying what I am doing rather than hunting down a special tie to wear with my suit. Take the time to put things where they belong before you head out. It is so much easier to keep things in check when you get in the routine of doing so. Also you will want make sure that your life remains in balance. So, take the time with your loved ones and have a routine for regular exercise, even if you don’t want to do it.
